Fully refurbished edge tool by Buck Brothers from the 1880s. Fresh leather shock pad installed at the bolster; the brass ferrule is heavy gage and in excellent shape - it is tight and set precisely. This is handsome old paring slick features a fancy turned black walnut handle, a hardwood species that was occasionally used by this maker, and most examples I've seen over time have all been over 90 years old.
As photos show, the tool steel has slight cosmetic pitting along much of the surface areas and is typical for a edge tool of such advanced age -- a century+. The tool steel itself is sound & straight, and it takes & holds an edge quite well. As a very large wood carving / paring tool, this one performs just as it should. On very old flat blade chisels like this one, the maker's stamp was sometimes found on the blade sole (underside) as opposed to the usual location on the face of the blade's back.
Photo #15 shows a tight check (repaired & blended) in walnut just above brass ferrule. It will not pose any issue.Tang is snug into the walnut, and the brass is plenty heavy gage to prevent any worry - I guarantee it. I totally refurbished this tool several months ago.
Keep in mind, this is a "push" type chisel - made for PARING duties; it is NOT meant to be malleted, as evidenced by style of handle. That said, a gentle tap with a wooden mallet won't hurt it - but a mallet usually isn't necessary when you keep a well-honed edge.
