RARE CENTRAL GLASS "U.S. COIN"

Available for purchase is a VERY RARE Early American Pattern Glass (EAPG) kerosene/oillamp. The pattern is referred to as "U.S. Coin" (originally called "The Silver Age"), made by the Central Glass Company and Hobbs, Brockunier and Company shortly after they joined the U.S. Glass Company in 1891. The design features facsimiles of real U.S. coins and was made in various tableware shapes, as well as oil lamps. Although immediately popular with the public, production of this pattern was abruptly shut down in May of 1892 after a government inspector pronounced that reproduction of actual U.S. coins was illegal and ordered the molds to be destroyed. As a result, the pattern was in production for only 5 months.There were two different forms of U.S. Coin lamps produced in several sizes. One has a square font with coins on each panel and the other has a round font without coins. Both forms have coins on the stems. This one is the square font design, which appears to be even more rare than the round font version. The font on this lamp has facsimiles of the front and rear design of a seated liberty half dollar (2 panels with front, 2 panels with rear). The stem features 6 molded replicas of a seated liberty quarter (3 front side and 3 rear side). The coins are dated "1892", which is 1 year after production of actual seated liberty coinage ended, but the date was reportedly intended to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the U.S. Mint.With the chimney and burner removed, this medium-size stand lamp measures about 8" tall to the top of the collar. The font is approximately 3 1/2" wide and the hexagonal base is 3 5/8" wide. The lamp has a #1 size (7/8" inside diameter) Taplin-Brown collar that I believe to be original. The "Eldorado" burner is period correct, manufactured by the Waterbury Brass Goods Corporation during the late 19th or early 20th century. I'm also including a period correct piecrust top chimney. With the burner and chimney in place, the lamp stands about 15 3/4" tall.I purchased this rare oil lamp at a recent estate sale. An identical example is pictured on page 213 in the book "Oil Lamps - The Kerosene Era in North America" by Catherine Thuro. It's listed with a 1976 book value of $850+. Please note that this lamp has not been reproduced.It's guaranteed to be an antique original U.S. Coin lamp made in 1892. Please check my positive response and buy with confidence from a trusted seller.Condition of this antique lamp is EXCELLENTwithno chips or cracks. There is some very minor rim roughness on the inside edge of the base, as made. The underside of the base has age-appropriate shelf wear indicative of its antique provenance. The collar and burner have some metal discoloration (I did not try to clean them). The antique chimney is very nice and undamaged. Overall,this antique lamp looks fantastic and displays beautifully. It would make a fine addition to any collection. Please take a close look at the many photos I've provided and judge condition for yourself.
