[Thousands of soldiers were "partially blind" or had "vision lost” from specific ocular injuries from hand-to-hand combat, shrapnel and projectile strikes. Thousands more were blinded by a severe inflammatory eye condition doctors at the time called "ophthalmia" (often caused by contagious bacterial infections spreading through filthy camps). While specialized eye hospitals were rare—the Confederacy operated one in Athens, Georgia, in 1864—general field and city hospitals, including those in Memphis, provided care for ocular injuries too. ]
