This medal is 1.5 inches long with bale (1.25 without bail)and it weighs 9 grams of bronze. Saint Anastasius of Persia (whose given namewas Magundat), was originally a Zoroastrian soldier in the Sasanian army wholater became a convert to Christianity. He was baptized by Modestus, receivingthe Christian name Anastasius to honor the resurrection of Jesus Christ("AnĂ¡stasis" in Greek). After seven years of monastic observance, hewas moved by the Holy Ghost to go in quest of martyrdom and went to Caesarea, then subject to the Sasanians. There he interrupted and ridiculed theZoroastrian priests for their religion and was as a result arrested by thelocal marzban, taken prisoner, cruelly tortured, was strangled to death anddecapitated on January 22, 628. His body, which was thrown to the dogs, but wasleft untouched by them, was carried from there to Palestine, afterwards toConstantinople, and finally to Rome.

Bernard of Vienne was born to the French nobility.Military officer in the army of Blessed Charlemagne. Upon the death of hisparents, he retired from the military, divided his property into three parts(one for the Church, one for the poor, one for his children), bought themonastery in Ambronay, and retired there. Abbot at Ambronay in 805. Archbishopof Vienne, France in 810; Bernard resisted the appointment but accepted afterbeing ordered to do so by Charlemagne and Pope Saint Leo III. Worked to unitethe Church in France and the East, trying to overcome their differences in theuse and attitude to images. He became embroiled in the political division oflands in France, was ordered deposed by the winning side, and retired frompublic life to concentrate on the pastoral duties of his see. The town ofRomans grew up around the place where he used to go for solitude.
