Sent into us thisweek, from one of the Carmelite convnets we work with is this beautiful SpanishColonial rosary medal that is 1 inch long and has a weight of 4 grams. Thismedal dates from the 18th Century.

Saint Teresa of Ávila, also called Saint Teresa of Jesus,baptized as Teresa Sánchez de Cepeda y Ahumada (28 March 1515 -- 4 October1582), was a prominent Spanish mystic, Roman Catholic saint, Carmelite nun,author during the Counter Reformation, and theologian of contemplative lifethrough mental prayer. She was a reformer of the Carmelite Order and is afounder of the Discalced Carmelites along with John of the Cross.

Saint John of the Cross, O.C.D. (Spanish: San Juan de laCruz; 24 June 1542 -- 14 December 1591), was a major figure of theCounter-Reformation, a Spanish mystic, a Roman Catholic saint, a Carmelitefriar, and a priest who was born at Fontiveros, Old Castile. John of the Crosswas a reformer of the Carmelite Order and is considered, along with SaintTeresa of Ávila, as a founder of the Discalced Carmelites. He is also known forhis writings. Both his poetry and his studies on the growth of the soul are consideredthe summit of mystical Spanish literature and one of the peaks of all Spanishliterature. He was canonized as a saint in 1726 by Pope Benedict XIII. He isone of the thirty-six Doctors of the Church.
