RARE: Brunswick & Balke, one of America's most important 1800's billiard and pool table manufacturers. The company operated under the specific name The J.M. Brunswick & Balke Co. between 1874 and 1884, following the merger of John Moses Brunswick’s firm with Julius Balke’s Great Western Billiard Manufactory. In 1884, the company absorbed the H.W. Collender Company to form the iconic Brunswick-Balke-Collender Co. Because "Collender" is absent from the title text, this card is precisely dated to the mid-1870s to early 1884. The card features the signature of F. Kerting, Lith. in the bottom right corner, a commercial lithographer active during this period. The illustration is a humorous, exaggerated cartoon designed to catch a consumer's eye: The illustration highlights a luxury billiard table resting on meticulously carved griffin or lion-shaped legs. This design exemplifies the exquisite, high-end woodwork of the Victorian era, with four elegantly dressed women playing a game around an ornate billiard table. The illustration adds a pool hall risque element by showing the woman with the cue stick lifting her leg and exposing skin up her dress so potential male buyers might associate the sport with sex and the mystique of male-dominated pool halls and billiard parlors.NOTE: FREE SHIPPING...
