Exceptional matched pair of mid-century table lamps by Puerto Rican Pottery of Santurce, Puerto Rico, the influential ceramics workshop directed by master ceramicist Hal Lasky. The substantial pottery bases feature deeply incised sgraffito decoration worked into richly colored surfaces, creating bold geometric compositions characteristic of Puerto Rican Pottery. Although clearly conceived as a pair, the hand-worked decoration varies between the two lamps, giving each its own individual character.Puerto Rican Pottery was established in Santurce during the development of Puerto Rico's modern ceramics industry and came under the direction of Hal Lasky in the late 1940s. Under Lasky, the workshop produced handcrafted utilitarian and decorative ceramics, including lamp bases, using distinctive incised and sgraffito designs.Importantly, these pieces should not be understood simply as factory-designed ceramics personally made by Lasky. Artisans working within Puerto Rican Pottery were given considerable freedom to interpret the workshop's design vocabulary, producing individually decorated pieces. Surviving examples are frequently signed or inscribed by hand. Both lamp bases are hand-inscribed “Puerto Rican Pottery” to the underside. Both lamps retain their original wiring and are in working order.Approximate dimensions:
