Postcard New Union Station Washington D.C. 1910s Beaux-Arts Railroad Depot: $12.99
This circa 1910s divided-back postcard presents a panoramic view of the New Union Station in Washington, District of Columbia, published by The Washington News Company of Washington, D.C., and issued in the post-1907 era when divided-back cards became standard. The front image depicts the monumental Beaux-Arts railway terminal with its white granite façade, arched openings, classical colonnade, and distinctive red-tiled barrel-vaulted roof; flags fly above the lower left section, while the open plaza and scattered early vehicles suggest the station’s first years of operation. The coloring reflects early chromolithographic or hand-colored production, with a pale blue sky, crisp off-white masonry, green trees, and a saturated red roof. The caption “NEW UNION STATION, WASHINGTON, D. C.” appears at top center, and the faint credit “C. & E. RICHTER” is printed at the lower right, likely identifying the photographer, artist, or distributor of the view. The verso is a classic divided-back layout with ornate blue “POST CARD” lettering, a stamp box, and the instruction “THIS SPACE FOR ADDRESS ONLY.” It remains unposted, with no manuscript message or address, and preserves the publisher’s vertical imprint “PUB. BY THE WASHINGTON NEWS COMPANY, WASHINGTON, D. C.” plus the series number 217830. The printed descriptive text identifies the station as a joint project of the U.S. Government, the Pennsylvania Railroad, and the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, citing land, building, and terminal improvements at $18,000,000 and describing the white granite structure as 700 feet long and 343 feet wide, “the finest railway station in the world.” A circular Washington, D.C. emblem appears near the bottom center. The card is in excellent to near-mint condition for its age, with good color retention and relatively sharp corners; the faint Richter credit and detailed contemporary narrative make it a useful artifact for collectors of Beaux-Arts architecture, railroad history, and Washington, D.C., local imprints.
