These guidelines are based on TCGPlayer’s “card conditioning overview.” There is always going to be some element of subjectivity to card condition – LP for some may be NM for others – but these are the criteria by which I denote cards’ conditions. I tend to do so fairly harshly, however. Foil/holographic cards are judged by the same criteria, even if, due to foil coming through scratches and wear, imperfections may be more noticeable.
Near Mint (NM)
A few slight flaws but minimal wear, to the point of looking nearly unplayed. This might be scratches that only appear at an angle and a couple of small areas of whitening on corners/edges.
Lightly Played (LP)
While there are no significant imperfections or issues with structural integrity of the card, there are a handful of imperfections including more significant edge wear, scuffs, or scratches compared to Near Mint. These should not, however, be at too high a volume.
Moderately Played (MP)
Significant edge or surface wear, scratches and scuffing (including showing a lot of foil), bends with creases, and broadly a combination of all of those. Bends and creases are generally smaller – for instance, on corners – and do not impact the structural integrity of the card. Generally, peeling and substance exposure acceptable in MP is away from the card’s content (image and text).
Heavily Played (HP)
Major wear with a variety of imperfections including creasing, whitening, and other faults. Defects and imperfections are severe, for instance heavy scratching, foil bleed, and worn edges, but do not impact the structural integrity of a card. For instance, an HP card may have a significant crease or fold, but if it does not go through the card and/or impact the structural integrity of the card (one example, does the card flop at the crease? Yes: compromised structural integrity closers to Damaged/DMG. No: integrity intact, closer to HP) it represents HP imperfections.
Damaged (DMG)
Imperfections that go beyond the scope of HP. This may be major whitening and wear at the edges, creases that travel through the card and cause it to flop on its own, even tears and splits. Any cards impacted by a foreign substance – outside of printing defects* – is damaged. Scratches are generally classified as HP and above, but major gashes in the artwork also constitute damage as opposed to heavy play.
*Printing defects are generally a whole other class of card. Some dislike them; others find them highly-desirable.
