Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz colored by the presence of iron, activated by exposure to natural radiation. Pink amethyst likewise owes its color to an iron chromophore, and is not equivalent to rose quartz, which derives its color from sub-microscopic inclusions of a fibrous dumortierite-like mineral. In 2017, geodes containing beautiful pink amethyst crystals made their first appearance on the mineral market at the Feira Internacional de Pedras Preciosas (FIPP), a mineral fair held in Teofilo Otoni, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The source of the geodes is the El Choique mine in Patagonia, Argentina. The occurrence consists of a collec tion of several hundred individual sedimentary beds extending over a large area.The El Choique mine is located in the northeast side of the Neuquén Basin in northern Patagonia, Argentina.
