No location or date. [At Sea, May 1946]

\"In circles, in front of me, the lights of Piraeus.

Tomorrow I wake up early. FINALLY! »

Moving fragment of Paul Eluard\'s logbook sailing to Greece.

May 16. 3h. I return to the amazing broker’s office with old men living in slow motion. I forgot to sign a pledge whereby I must strictly adhere to the life of the boat, austere, disciplined.

4h. I’m boarding. The boat (Liberty Ship) will depart at 6am. At 5am tea, meal. One of the officers: Mathurin. I’d gotten used to Italy and I’m very uncomfortable leaving it. I’ve been shown so much love and so much made everything easier.” I am the only passenger. There are a dozen officer cadets ages 18-20.

May 17. 7 hours. Stromboli smoking black and white. At its feet, two villages between water and fire. Captain has been traveling for almost 40 years. At noon we will arrive at the Strait of Messina. The sea is very calm, the sky is cloudy. Midi. Messina. White butterflies. Small birds are carried. L’Etna. The cat.

8pm. The Silver Evening. Swallows - Sharks.

May 18. We will arrive tomorrow around noon. Very nice weather. A tiny bird comes on my lap.

5pm Kalamata Bay is in sight. Snow on a summit. In the evening, the captain tries his revolver endlessly on the bridge. The sky is yellow. The Black Sea.

May 19. 6am: Bare islands, high snowy mountains. Extraordinary seconds. Very low clouds. Bright sun.

10h. I slept for an hour. When I wake up, I notice we’ve been shooting. The islands are now on port. We’ll be touring the peninsula and surely won’t arrive today.

11h. We are still spinning. English explanations. I don\'t know where we are or where we are going. Finally, we\'ll see.

12h. I was shown the card. This is simply the Ridge we leave behind.

17h. Sun, but on the sea without a frost-like wrinkle, lots of mist. Everywhere small islands. We walk very slowly. The captain confesses to me he was in the \"Resistance\". He hates Germans and despises southern Italians.

22.45. I get up to look out the window. In circles, in front of me, the lights of Piraeus. Tomorrow I wake up early. FINALLY!

From the post-war period, Éluard expressed himself as an ambassador of French culture, and political causes.\"\" Undertaking a series of trips to Czechoslovakia, Italy, Yugoslavia, and Greece (during the Civil War), Eluard engaged relentlessly in militant activity, giving lecturing and reading tours.\" It was in this context that Paul Éluard visited Athens and Thessaloniki in May 1946, taking part in a ceremony at the \"Institut Français d’Athènes\" on May 27, 1946.

Eluard’s relationship with Greece and the partisan movement had already been highlighted, among others, with the poem \"Athena\", written on December 9, 1944, following the outbreak of Athens’ bloody events.
