RARE - Exceptional matched pair of antique German porcelain cabinet plates/chargers featuring exquisitely hand-painted female portraits framed by elaborate raised and etched gilded decoration.
These two matching border portrait plates are designed after artist Joseph Stieler’s portrait paintings. Joseph Karl Stieler (1781-1858) was a famous 19th century portraitist and the favorite painter of King Ludwig I of Bavaria. Stieler was commissioned by King Ludwig to paint36women from 1827-1842; their portraits are on view at the Schloss Nymphenburg. King Ludwig devoted his gallery(‘Schonheitsgalerie’in the Schloss Nymphenburg, Munich, Germany) to beautiful women of his kingdom. The King personally selected each of the 36 subjects and commissioned Stieler to paint their portraits. As a reward for their cooperation, the women were given the dresses in which they were painted. These works of art were reproduced on Royal Vienna porcelain plates. Stieler themed plates are often of impeccable quality and are rarely available for sale. Collectors will often collect the entire set of 36 portrait plates.
Each plate displays finely hand-painted medallions signed Richter, executed in the KPM Berlin tradition, surrounded by richly ornamented gold borders exhibiting exceptional craftsmanship and luxurious detail.
The reverse of each bears the blue KPM scepter marks along with decorator and production numbers. The portrait panels are artist signed by Richter.
These impressive display pieces date to the late 1800's to early 1900's and represent high-quality European decorative art porcelain intended for cabinet or wall display.

Exceptional Antique Condition.Both plates present beautifully and are in exceptional condition. These plates have clearly been well maintained with no chips, cracks or restorations observed.
