DESCRIPTION:
Pre-Columbian Teotihuacan-style carved jasper stone pendant mask depicting Tonatiuh, the Mesoamerican Sun God, ca. 700–1200 AD.
The compact mask features a highly stylized human face with an elongated nose, almond-shaped eyes, defined lips, prominent brow details, and carved lateral ear ornaments. The symmetrical composition and deeply defined facial features give the piece a strong sculptural presence despite its small size.
Carved from an attractive reddish-brown jasper stone with a smooth polished surface and darker coloration accentuating portions of the facial details.
Tonatiuh was an important solar deity in Central Mexican religious tradition, associated with the sun and its movement across the sky. Because the identification of individual deities from isolated objects can be uncertain, the Tonatiuh attribution should be understood as an iconographic attribution rather than independently verified from the photograph alone.
