Handwritten letter, tardily declining a luncheon invitation, signed the month he became Secretary of State
Autograph Letter signed: \"P C Knox\", 2 pages (front and verso), 4½x5¼. No place, 1909 March 7. To \"My dear Mr. Walsh\", in full: \"Your invitation to lunch with you at the Metropolitan Club Saturday was just brought to my attention this morning for the reason that when it was received it was put with a lot of other mail which I have just had time to take up, owing to press of other matters. This will explain why you have not heard from me before and I trust you will accept my apology. Thanking you for the honor of the invitation which I regret I was unable to accept, I am Very Sincerely Yours\". Philander Chase Knox (1853-1921) served as President William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt\'s Attorney General (1901-1904) and as President William Howard Taft\'s Secretary of State (1909-1913). As Secretary of State Knox, by background a corporate lawyer, was closely identified with Taft\'s \"Dollar Diplomacy\" (promoting US interests by promoting foreign investments of US corporations). He represented Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate from 1904 to 1909 and from 1917 until his death on October 12, 1921. Mailing fold through center. Toned and lightly creased. Edges and corners lightly toned. Minor ink smears (legible). Otherwise, fine condition.
