PACIFIC NORTHWEST \"MAKAH\" THUNDERBIRD/WHALE TRIBAL MASK- SIGNED BY RALPH COX For Sale

A hand-carved & painted Pacific Northwest Coast wooden indigenous mask created by Ralph Cox, a contemporary Native American artist from the \"Makah\" tribe based in Neah Bay, Washington. It is titled, signed & dated by the artist on the reverse side (see photos). It is titled: \"VILLAGE WARRIOR WITH THUNDERBIRD & WHALE AND COPPER EYES\". It is signed \"BY MAKAH ARTIST,RALPH COX\" and dated \"SEPTEMBER 26, 2001\".It is crafted out of cedar, detailed with paint, and heavily adorned with thick, layered fringes of natural red cedar bark serving as hair. The faciial structure exhibits traditional formline patterns, including bold ovoid shapes and u-forms carved around the copper inset eyes and cheeks. Ralph Cox\'s authentic masks are highly regarded for keeping Makah cultureal traditions alive. Similar works of his art are archived at the Burke Museum in Seattle. Including the cedar hair, the mask measures approximately 16\" inches height by 12\" inches width. The wooden face of the mask measures approximately 7 1/2\" inches height by 4 3/4\" inches width. The mask & hair are in excellent condition.
