About the image
The Tilma of Saint Juan Diego has hung at the Basilica of Our Lady ofGuadalupe in Mexico City for nearly 500 years. The cactus-fiber cloakshould have decayed within about twenty years and hasn't. In 1936 theNobel-laureate chemist Richard Kuhn examined the pigments and foundthey were not animal, not mineral, and not vegetable in origin. In1979 infrared analysis found no paint layer, no brush strokes, and nounderdrawing on the fabric. The image has survived a nitric acid spillin 1791 and a bomb blast at its foot in 1921.
"Know for certain, littlest of my sons, that I am the perfect and perpetual Virgin Mary, Mother of the True God through Whom everything lives, the Lord of all things near and far, the Master of heaven and earth."
