An original mid 19th century albumen photograph in Carte de Visite (CDV) format, depicting a veiled woman in traditional Arab-style dress in Egypt, dating to circa 1860.
Photographed by W. Hammerschmidt, a photographer active in Cairo, Egypt, during the 19th century.
This fascinating full-length studio portrait shows a woman wearing an elaborate dark outer cloak over a long, light-coloured dress, with a white face veil covering most of her face and leaving only her eyes visible. The richly draped garments, with their distinctive folds and textures, offer an intriguing glimpse into the traditional clothing and cultural subjects represented in early Egyptian photography.
The reverse bears an original handwritten inscription, which appears to read \"Arabe lade\", together with the photographer\'s oval stamp \"W. HAMMERSCHMIDT, CAIRO.\"
An interesting example of early photography from Egypt, reflecting the Arab-style costumes and cultural imagery documented by 19th-century photographers working in the Middle East.
A particularly appealing piece for collectors of early photography, Egyptian and Arab history, traditional Middle Eastern costumes, Orientalist photography, ethnographic portraits and Victorian travel memorabilia.
