Original WW2 Photo Okinawa Naha Bank Ruins OOAK Sharp Contact Print 1945
Up for sale is an exceptional, authentic, and one-of-a-kind (OOAK) vintage World War 2 vernacular photograph capturing the historic aftermath of the Battle of Okinawa. This is a true vintage contact print, measuring approximately 3 13/16" x 3 3/16". It features a remarkably sharp contact sharpness and deep contrast that perfectly highlights the stark textures of the structural damage.
Historical Subject:
The image depicts the war-damaged, reinforced concrete shell of the National 147th Bank Okinawa Branch (later known as the Kagoshima Kogyo Bank Naha Branch), located in the Higashimachi district of Naha, Okinawa. While the surrounding downtown core was entirely leveled by intense Allied aerial and naval bombardment, this classic Western-style structure with its distinctive semicircular columned facade miraculously remained standing.
In May 1948, this exact building was hastily repaired by the U.S. Military Government to serve as the historic first headquarters for the newly chartered Bank of the Ryukyus to help stabilize the postwar economy.
