Originalantique lithograph titled "Negro Drivers of the Baggage Train Attachedto General Pleasonton's Cavalry Brigade Watering their Mules in theRappahannock River."

  • The image area measures 24 x36 cm [9½" x 14"], and the illustration depicts an interval during therun-up to what would be the largest cavalry battle ever fought in NorthAmerica, on June 9, 1863 when Union General Alfred Pleasonton sentcolumns over the Rappahannockat Beverly Ford and Kelly's Ford to attack Confederate Major GeneralJ.E.B.Stuart's cavalry division at Brandy Station and Stevensburg, Virginia.
  • The caption below the illustration's titledescribes that after "the institution of slavery was shattered...Blacksbegan to beemployed as a sort of assistant corps to the army...They were nearlyallexpert hostlers, and the Union commanders employed them in thatcapacity."
  • This lithograph was published in Battles andCommandersof the Civil War, edited by General Marcus Joseph Wright,Washington, D.C., 1902.
