This is a one of a kind, handmade perfume/scent bottle, glass with silver overlay. The cap has an English Art Nouveau enamel row of flowers in red, white, blue and green. So does the front of the body. The backside has an inscription: Margherita. The top is three pieces: a hinged ring attaching to the bottle, the cap itself, and the original cork lining inside. It is about 3 3/4 inches tall over all: meant for purse or pocket, rather than a shelf. In other words, like so much Art Nouveau, it was meant to be useful, not just pretty.
When I bought it (from my favorite dealer in Paris) 25 years ago, it was gleaming bright silver. I have not polished it, so it has developed a patina over the metal parts. If you would prefer the shine, it would be nothing to clean up the patina.
In addition to the handmade nature of the incredibly laborious enamel process, the glass body shows it was hand shaved to accommodate the metal sleeve that is the bottom half.
This was obviously a precious gift to a certain Margherita, whose name is inscribed in flowing script on the back. The enamels, on both the cap and the body front, are very much in the English Art Nouveau style, with enameling being extraordinarily popular in the UK over any other country.
It has been on display in a showcase in our home for the past 25 years, and it is time for it to find a worthy home again.
