ABOUT THIS SANTA
The Nutcracker story is the hardest thing to paint on him. Clara lifts the hem of her blue party dress and turns toward the Nutcracker, who stands at attention under the tree. On the back, a twelve-paned window looks out on falling snow, with a polka-dot curtain tied back and wrapped presents on the floor. The sleeves join in too, one painted as fir boughs and the other as curtain fabric. Fitting all of it onto a curved, carved coat keeps the artist busy for several days. The staff is a separate piece with a faceted top, and you can lift it out when you pack him away. At 9.5 inches tall he fits a shelf, a sideboard or a tabletop among your Nutcrackers.
