Occupied Japan Pair Figurine, Andrea By Sadek, 14\" H 9.25\" W 5\" D. Slight Damage:
$145.00

Beautiful and unusually large vintage hand-painted porcelain figural group depicting a young man playing a mandolin/lute accompanied by a young woman playing a tambourine.

The underside bears the early “HAND PAINTED / ANDREA S / MADE IN OCCUPIED JAPAN” mark. Andrea by Sadek originated with the Charles Sadek Import Company of New Rochelle, New York, founded in 1936. The Occupied Japan marking dates this piece to the post-WWII Allied occupation period, approximately 1945–1952.

This is an impressive large example measuring approximately:

Height: 14\"
Width: 9.25\"

The figurine features extensive hand-painted detail, raised and pierced decoration, gold accents, period clothing, musical instruments and an integral scenic base.

CONDITION: Vintage condition with age-related wear. The woman\'s hand that holds the tambourine was previously broken and has been glued/repaired. There is also wear to the underside/base consistent with decades of display and movement. Please examine all photographs carefully, particularly the repaired hand, as the photos are an important part of the condition description.

A substantial and decorative early Andrea/Sadek Japanese porcelain piece for collectors of Occupied Japan porcelain, Andrea by Sadek, vintage Japanese figurines, musical figurines and mid-century decorative porcelain.

Please note: This is a large, fragile porcelain figurine and will be packed carefully for shipment.

Made in Occupied Japan, its manufacture can be placed in the occupation era, 1945–1952, rather than merely described loosely as “mid-century.”

Who was Andrea by Sadek?

Andrea by Sadek was an American importer and designer of decorative porcelain and giftware, not a Japanese porcelain factory. The business began as the Charles Sadek Import Company in New Rochelle, New York, in 1936. Charles Sadek and his son Norman were behind the company. The “Andrea” name came from Norman Sadek\'s daughter, Andrea Sadek, who later became an important designer and executive with the company.

The company is particularly interesting in connection with Japan. Norman Sadek was an early participant in the reopening of trade with Japan after World War II. Contemporary industry reporting specifically notes that Andrea/Sadek merchandise carrying “Occupied Japan” markings survives today.

That makes the mark on your musical couple especially useful:

HAND PAINTED / ANDREA S / MADE IN OCCUPIED JAPAN

That isn\'t merely a generic Occupied Japan mark. It ties the piece to the Sadek importing business during the Allied occupation of Japan.
