[ Early portraitfrom1886, a pivotal year for Pawnee Bill. He spent the early 1880s traveling as a translator for the Pawnee troupe in Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West Show. In August 1886, he married May Manning, and around this time, he actively began cultivating his own distinct showman persona in major Midwest hubs like Chicago before launching his own historic Wild West show in 1888.]

[Historical Note for Collectors:This authentic August 1886 cabinet card captures a rare, brief window at the start of Gordon William Lillie’s career when he sat for photographer Edward F. Hartley at 309 W. Madison St. in Chicago. To build his independent 'Wild West' persona, he briefly emulated William F. Cody’s style with long hair, a striped vest, neck chain and his personal 2-inch black jet stone cluster brooch. This is a documented, uniform pose from the Hartley studio session and should not be confused with later portraits or mixed-up novelty prints.]
