This postcard depicts the international boundary fence between Nogales, Arizona and Nogales, Sonora, Mexico.
The fence originated as a cooperative cattle barrier ordered by Nogales’s mayor to direct cross-border traffic. Its erection along International Street sparked the 1918 Battle of Ambos Nogales, establishing the first permanent boundary fence between the two cities.Residents once crossed the six-wire barrier freely to collect acorns, a daily routine that defined Ambos Nogales—"Both Nogales"—before tensions from the Mexican Revolution and World War I transformed the area into a contested border.Today, the fence has evolved into a steel barrier that still marks the division between Nogales in Arizona and Sonora, echoing a century of border enforcement that began with those original wires.Published by Petley Studios of Phoenix, Arizona, this color postcard features photography by Stan Davis and is numbered T-434.
