Saint Croix Island International Historic Site Token commemorates the first French settlement in North America, harkening back to 1604. The site is located on an island in the Saint Croix River, which forms the border between Maine, US, and New Brunswick, Canada. The river was named by Jacques Cartier in 1535, but the settlement at St Croix was founded by explorers Pierre duGast, and Samuel de Champlain in 1604, on a river that was economically important for the lumber trade.
