The Pileated Woodpecker is North America's largest woodpecker, identifiable by its large size (about the size of a crow), black and white plumage, and distinctive flaming red crest. This species excavates large, rectangular holes in trees to feed on carpenter ants and other insects, living in mature forests and suburbs with large trees. While once rare due to deforestation, the population has recovered and they are a captivating sight for birdwatchers, with a loud, distinctive call.This Nutcracker is Handcrafted in Germany with great care and attention to detail.
WHY A BIRD?
Christian Ulbricht`s father, Otto, was so happy on the birth of his first son that he created a nutcracker for the occasion. This nutcracker, for the first time, was in the shape of a bird, and he gave it as a gift to his wife called Welly. In 1997 the successful story for the special event piece began with the "wood pecker" which since then has been followed by a new model each year.
