These symbolic icons represent our connection with the natural world. They have rarely been seen out of the medicine family except at a 'sing' or 'chant'(healing or blessing ceremony). These are not folk art or curiosities to be displayed as conversation pieces. They are 'holy pictures' and should be hung in 'special' places. The icons inspire the symbolism they portray to the place and people that view them. Respect, thought, and care should be shown as to where and when these images are a cleansing time is exercised before the patient takes part in a sandpainting ceremony. They may be accompanied by care givers as some ceremonies last up to 9 days. During this time various sand paintings arecast around the patient for healing or blessings. These are always accompanied by sings, chants, dances, food, herbs etc...In fact the sandpaintings themselves are only part of a much larger ritual. The paintings are most often destroyed at the end of a ceremony. Some blessing paintings may be left to fall apart naturally due to weather or some other natural phenomena. This is largely symbolic but also possibly scientific. It is believed the sand absorbs the negative energy or illness, and the positive energy from the paintings is emanated to the patient and/or surroundings. Sometimes homes, land, or even personal property may have ceremonies done on them. The 'singer' or 'chanter' may be very famous and require great payment for their services. It may take an entire lifetime to learn one ceremony, each with dozens of sandpaintings. paintings are beautifully symmetric and highly geometric artwork. Their purpose is for use in healing ceremonies, where a clean sand base is place in a ceremonial Hogan (Navajo house). These authentic memory blankets are available no where else. They were hand painted by Bruce Hathale and his older brother Dennis, sons of the late Navajo medicine man Roger Hathale. All family members are deceased. The paintings portray imagry directly from the ceremonies and a rich and colorful tradition of a time and place almost forgotten.
