ABOUT DEMANTOID GARNET
Demantoid is the green variety of andradite garnet, a calcium-iron silicate mineral. Its green colour is linked to traces of chromium and iron. It is especially valued by collectors for its brilliant lustre, high refractive index and exceptional dispersion, which is higher than that of diamond and gives the mineral its famous fire. The name comes from an old word for diamond, \"demant.\"
Demantoid commonly forms as dodecahedral or trapezohedral crystals in serpentinite and skarn environments. Classic localities include the Ural Mountains of Russia, as well as Namibia, Madagascar, Italy. This example features natural green demantoid garnet crystals positioned on matrix.
In jewellery, fine demantoid is faceted and set into rings, earrings, pendants, necklaces and bracelets, where its fire and vivid green colour make it one of the most prized garnets. This piece is offered as a natural collector specimen on matrix and is best suited for display rather than cutting.
HISTORY
Demantoid was discovered in Russia\'s Ural Mountains in the mid-19th century and quickly became one of the most treasured green gemstones of its time. Its striking fire made it a favourite of Russian jewellers, including the House of Fabergé, and it appeared widely in Victorian and Edwardian jewellery until the Russian Revolution.
