This 9 strand Number 8 Turquoise heishi necklace is strung withdark brown pen shell heishi and two tiny red spiney oyster beads; the necklace is 30 inches with a hanging length of 15 inches and has a \"Squaw Wrap\" Closure. The strands are all the same length and are not graduated. These turquoise heishi are roughly 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 mm long and 3 mm in diameter. The Pen shell heishi are 2 1/3 mm in diameter. There is no clasp; the necklace is designed to fit over the head.The necklaceweighs approximately 70 grams. The turquoise is a lovely blue / green with brown matrix.
Number 8 turquoise came from the Number 8 mine in Eureka, Nevada. It was mined out in the early 1970\'s and is rare and valuable.
I bought this necklace directly from Lita Atencio at the Indian Market at the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis in the early 2000\'s.She told me she inherited the rough Number 8 turquoise from her grandfather.As I wore it around the event other artists recognized it as Number 8 and asked where I got it. Such fun!
