Why are USPS rates so high now?
USPS announced the new holiday pricing on August 25. Seasonal increases are familiar, but this year has an important extra layer: the Postal Service’s filing says these changes are in addition to the separate 8% transportation-related increase that began April 26.
That means the October prices are not simply the usual holiday adjustment applied to the rates customers paid at the beginning of 2026. They build on the already higher package prices now in effect
USPS added temporary peak-season increases to Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, USPS Ground Advantage and Parcel Select from October 4, 2026 through January 17, 2027. Stamps and other market-dominant products are not part of this filing.
