Legend has it that in a certain Mexican village it was the custom

on Christmas eve to go to church and place a gift before the creche.

A little boy, having nothing to give, knelt outside the church and, as

he prayed, a beautiful red leaved plant grew beside him. This

he presented to the Christ Child

In Mexico the plant is called \"Flor de la Noche Buena\"

(Flower of the Holy Night)

In 1928, Dr Joel John Poinsett, the first minister from

the United States to Mexico brought the Christmas flower
