Active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this studio focused extensively on regional studio portraiture. This card is a historic ethnographic portrait study depicting a Mojave (Mohave) woman.

The Mojave people are indigenous to the Colorado River Valley, the geographic area surrounding present-day Needles, California. Studio portraits like this frequently documented local Indigenous communities, highlighting cultural practices such as the art of balancing large, handmade pottery vessels (olla) on the head. The embossed script signature on the lower card margin is characteristic of professional studio presentation choices from the 1890s through the 1910s.

Historical prints from this specific Scott studio series are highly collectible pieces of early American West and Native American photographic history.
