MEXICAN MASK FOR THE DANZA DE LOS VIEJITOS ORDANCE OF THE OLD MEN
Dimensions : 7.25” x 5”
These kind of masks are from the lake region of Michoacán, produced in the area of Tzintzutzan, Patzcuaro et al. The masks are used for the dance of los Viejitos. Although too much is talked about the dance not many seem to understand its origins, as in the beginning, los Viejitos used to go out to dance in the day of the Nativity, as a way to greet baby Jesus the day he was born. The job the Viejitos have to do besides dancing, was to retrieve the "Aguinaldo" or cooperation from the towns men for the church. As time passed, the dance was stripped out of its original ideas and now has become more of a staple of a traditional dance without its religious connotations.
