Mata Ortiz PotteryArtist: Baudel Lopez - First GenerationHand MadeHand PaintedCarved - Shiny Hand Polished -This beautiful tera cota with black jar - olla made by Baudel Lopez, is polychrome highly hand polished piece that is decorated with carved details and hand painted geometric Paquime traditional design.Baudel Lopez is a potter from the village of Mata Ortiz in Northern Mexico. He began working with clay in the early 1990's and has since taught the traditional art to all his older brothers. He says he learned by watching others, but he doesn't point at any single person as his teacher. He also spends time in New Mexico. In 1992 the drought in Chihuahua was so bad some of his family's cattle died and prices were too low to sell the others. Times were hard but that was when his family reaped the rewards of having allowed Baudel, the youngest son, the time to learn to work with clay and paint on it. the income from his pots helped all his family through the drought. He seems to work mostly with brown and red clays to make his pots. His trademark painting and sgraffito designs are very intricate. The shapes and organic openings of his pieces are quite distinctive. He sometimes collaborates with others.Artist Signed On Bottom Of PiecePiece Is 5.5 Inches Tall x 5.33 Inches In Diameter - Opening Is 2 Inch In Diameter Piece will include a pottery ringRiser And Greenery Not Included (DISPLAY ONLY)I personally hand selected this gorgeous olla from the artist. Named after the modern town of Mata Ortiz, which is near the archeological site, the style was propagated by Juan Quezada Celado. Quezada learned on his own to recreate this ancient pottery and then went on to update it. By the mid 1970's, Quezada was selling his pottery and teaching family and friends to make it and the pottery was able to penetrate the U.S. markets thanks to traders. By the 1990's, the pottery was being shown in museums and other cultural institutions and sold in fine galleries. The success of the pottery, which is sold for aesthetic rather than its utilitarian value, has brought the town of Mata Ortiz out of poverty, with most of its populations earning income from the industry, directly or indirectly.Be Sure To View All Photos Shown For Views Of The Beautiful Work. You Will Want To Add This Beauty Into Your Collection - Sure To Become One Of Your Families Heirloom PiecesInternational Buyers WelcomeAll Forms Of PayPal Payments AcceptedOur Studio Is Pet Free, Smoke Free, Very CleanWe Do Offer Combined Shipping Costs On Multiple Purchases.
