Artist & Style Background
Mata Ortiz pottery is a modern revival ofancient Mogollon/Casas Grandes ceramicsfrom the region near Casas Grandes in Chihuahua, Mexico. Revered for its fine, smooth finish and artistic designs, this pottery style was resurrected in the1970s by self-taught potter Juan Quezadaand has since grown into a thriving artistic movement with hundreds of artisansworking in the town today.
Potters in Mata Ortizoften build vessels using coil or paddle techniques without a wheel, burnishsurfaces by hand, and decorate using intricate painting or sgraffito — an etching method that revealscontrasting colors beneath the surface.
Diana Loya is a noted Mata Ortiz artist wholearned her craft from family connections (including her husband Alfredo“Freddy” Rodriguez) and has produced a range of decorative pottery piecesfeaturing nature-inspired motifs. Her work — like this piece — combines traditionaltechniques with original artistic interpretation, making them collectibleexamples of contemporary Mexican folk pottery.
