There are crosses… and then there are crosses that completely dominate a room.
This extraordinary late 19th century Gothic Revival crucifix has immense physical presence — standing over two feet tall and weighing an incredible 10.2 pounds. The sheer scale, density, and solemnity of the piece give it the feeling of something architectural rather than decorative. It does not feel mass-produced or modern. It feels old. Heavy. Reverent. Permanent.
The cross itself is formed from thick textured steel or iron with deeply sculptural Gothic-inspired geometry and repeating foliate motifs throughout. Mounted atop it is a beautifully cast bronze or brass corpus of Christ with rich aged patina and remarkable anatomical detail. The dramatic elongated torso, angled head, sharply defined ribs, and flowing drapery folds are all characteristic of high-quality ecclesiastical metalwork from the late Victorian period.
The four roundels at the ends of the cross depict the traditional symbols of the Four Evangelists:
- Angel / Man — Matthew
- Lion — Mark
- Ox — Luke
- Eagle — John
These medallions are especially important because they firmly root the piece in traditional Catholic iconography and elevate it well beyond ordinary devotional décor. Their style strongly suggests Continental European influence — likely French, Belgian, German, or Italian workshop production from the 1880–1900 era.
The bronze elements have developed an exceptional naturally aged surface with green and brown oxidation throughout, giving the piece an almost archaeological presence. In person, the contrast between the warm aged bronze and the dark textured iron is absolutely stunning.
The scale is what truly sets this example apart. At over 24 inches tall and weighing more than many, this crucifix has the visual authority of something that once hung in a chapel, rectory, monastery, or grand Victorian home. It has a deeply atmospheric quality — almost cinematic in low light.
Unlike modern reproductions, every part of this piece feels overbuilt:

- individually mounted bronze elements
- deeply struck textures
- authentic period wear and oxidation
- oversized dimensional presence
Even the INRI plaque retains the strong, restrained styling associated with 19th century religious metalwork.

Displays beautifully with outstanding age and presence. Honest oxidation, patina, surface wear, and age throughout consistent with a genuine late 19th century ecclesiastical object. No major structural damage observed. The aged surface is part of its tremendous character and should absolutely not be polished.
