Offered is this magnificent two piece antique French majolica asparagus platter.
This platter is attributed to the Nimy-les-Mons majolica factory in the north of France that started in 1789, this platter was produced between 1800-1890.
It features the platter and the drainer. You steam your asparagus and put them on the two piece platter, any extra water or liquid will fall to the bottom of the platter through the holes on the top strainer, there are 2 large holes and 12 small holes.
The strainer piece is so beautiful with two purple and green tipped asparagus stalks on each side with pink flowers and green leaves on brown vines swirling on each end on a cream cross hatch basket weave and rope background.
The main platter features a scalloped form with a brown rope edge. It has purple and green asparagus tips on either side with reddish flowers and green leaves on a brown vine in between. On each end of the handles is a large artichoke flower with green and red leaves. All are on a cream cross hatch basket weave and rope background.
It measures 14.5 inches long and 9.25 inches wide.
It is in excellent condition for its great age. I found only one chip on the bottom foot ring which it sits on and is not seen. The rest is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. There is the usual overall glaze crazing and stilt marks from the kiln which is normal and expected with antique majolica this old. This is just a fabulous and beautiful set.
