Marvel Comics' hugely selling SPIDER-MAN #1 launched (Cover date: August, 1990) at the early height of the late 1980's and early 1990's "comic boom" with one of Marvel's hottest creators -- TODD MCFARLANE -- at the helm of their first adjective-less Spider-series. McFarlane had just completed his several year run on Amazing Spider-man with writer David Michelinie during which he was responsible for the series' design and introduction of VENOM and the classic, iconic cover of Amazing Spider-Man #300. Already well-known to Marvel's Spider-base, as well as to other fan bases for his popular runs on and iconic contributions to series like Incredible Hulk from #331-#346 with Peter David, a legion of fans was at the ready when Spider-Man #1 hit comic shops on 21 June 1990.
The series premiere of Spider-Man #1 dropped with two different covers and cover art by McFarlane, who also wrote and penciled every issue of his run. The first cover, featuring a green background, launched with 800,000 unbagged and 125,000 polybagged editions -- close to a million copies. Along with them, Marvel also dropped a black and silver colored edition, it's print run also including 125,000 polybagged editions but also 1.2 million unbagged copies. In all, McFarlane's premiere issue saw a first print run of 2,250,000 copies -- and its a print run that doesn't include special editions such as its Platinum edition or reprints.
The immediate results of this history-making launchwas an unprecedented sell-out of those millions of copies -- and the validation of a phenomena that identified McFarlane as the most popular creator working in comics. This popularity would assist McFarlane far more than it would Marvel, as McFarlane -- along with six other "hot" Marvel creators -- gave their notice that they were leaving the publisher to establish a creator-owned publishing company of their own: Image Comics.
McFarlane's remained at the top of his game in all the years since Spider-Man #1's debut 34 years ago, and the enormous impact, popularity and ubiquitous nature of the issue reverberated through fanbase and pop culture overall with seismic, long-lasting implications. The issue marks an undeniably powerful moment in time, was the catalyst of something greater for comic book creators, and, of course, generated A LOT of money on a global scale for Marvel Comics. For all these reasons and more, McFarlane's cover art of Spider-Man #1 has become the most re-created cover art --- ever.
