On February 20, 1940, Cleven enlisted in the Army. His service with the 100th Bomb Group of theEighth Air Forcebegan on October 27, 1942.[3]
He was a part of theRegensburg shuttle mission, piloting one of the fewB-17sto reach North Africa. On October 8, 1943, while on his 22nd mission, he was shot down overBremenin Germany. Cleven was then taken as aprisoner-of-wartoStalag Luft IIIandStalag VII-A, before escaping to American lines in March 1945.
Major General William Veal entered active military service in Feb 1940 and was commissioned a second Lt in October of 1940. During World War II he was the 100th Bomb Group (H), 349th BS Commanding Officer with the rank of Major. Arriving with the Original cadre in June 1943 and staying until October of 1943 when he was transferred to 13th Combat Wing HQ. He participated in the campaigns of Normandy, Air Offensive Europe, Rome-Arno, Southern France and Northern France.
