Two vintage Sanford, North Carolina postcards, both unused, from the same series and numbered consecutively.
1. RESIDENCE OF MR. E. L. GAVIN, SANFORD, N.C. (no. 20633). White-border view of the Gavin House, a two-story Neoclassical Revival dwelling with a colossal Ionic portico, set well back on a broad lawn. The house stands at 305 Hawkins Avenue and was built in 1922 by Sanford builder John Matthews for the attorney Edward Lee Gavin, of heart pine cut from Gavin's own farm off what is now US 421. It is a contributing building in the Hawkins Avenue Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Gavin's son, Robert L. Gavin, practiced in the family firm of Gavin, Jackson and Gavin in Sanford and was later the Republican nominee for governor of North Carolina.
2. RESIDENCE OF MR. W. R. MAKEPEACE, SANFORD, N.C. (no. 20634). White-border view of a substantial brick house with a low tile-roofed porch on heavy brick piers and a period touring car under the porte-cochere. The Makepeace family were long associated with Sanford's lumber and millwork trade, including the Makepeace Millwork Company. Note the printing flaw in this card's caption, which reads "San.ord, N. C."
Both published by the Asheville Post Card Co., Asheville, N.C. The consecutive numbers and the 1922 construction date of the Gavin House place the series in the 1920s. Sanford views of this period are uncommon, and named-residence cards of this kind are of particular interest to local historians and to descendants of the two families.
CONDITION: Both cards are unposted with clean, unwritten backs. The Gavin card has a chipped upper left corner and old album-mounting stains at three corners of the reverse, with light scattered foxing; its printed image is bright and undamaged. The Makepeace card has no chips or creases, with small tan mounting stains at the corners of the back and light foxing; the front is clean and bright.
