Lot 4 Territory of Hawaii Gulch Canyon Road Photographs Schofield c1920s-30s: $8.99
This lot comprises four vintage sepia-toned gelatin silver snapshot photographs documenting gulch and canyon terrain, likely taken in the Territory of Hawaii during the Schofield-era of the early twentieth century. Each print is characterized by a narrow white border and warm sepia toning typical of amateur roll-film photography from the 1910s through the 1930s. The photographs share a compositional preoccupation with roads cut into eroded slopes, surveying the landscape from elevated vantage points that emphasize the dramatic topography of the islands. The first print bears a white handwritten caption applied directly to the negative, reading \"road in gulch,\" which identifies the subject while leaving the specific location unnamed. The remaining three prints are uncaptioned, presenting varied perspectives of winding dirt roads descending into and traversing steep, eroded gulches. In one view, a well-worn road snakes through a vegetated mid-ground, the denser plant cover suggesting a different microclimate or stage of erosion; in another, the road drops sharply into a deeper valley before ascending a heavily eroded opposite slope, where exposed earth and rock predominate and patches of vegetation cling to the upper edges. The photographs exhibit the snapshot aesthetic of personal album keeping, with natural daylight illuminating the textured geology and enhancing the sense of depth through the sepia toning. The versos, as represented by the sample back, show overall age-related toning to a light cream color, faint circular stains consistent with album mounting, and small irregular ink smudges. A handwritten notation in blue ink or pencil appears in the upper left corner of the sample verso, reading \"91 X 69,\" likely an inventory or size reference rather than a catalog number. These images offer a vernacular record of early infrastructure and natural landscape in Hawaii, capturing the intersection of human engineering and volcanic terrain as experienced by individuals stationed at or living near Schofield Barracks. The roads serve as leading lines through the compositions, guiding the eye across eroded slopes and into the hazy distance characteristic of Hawaiian scenery.
