Offered here is a two-can vintage Pennzoil Tough-Film Motor Oil collection featuring the classic Z-7 branding. Both are original 1-quart cardboard/fiberboard composite oil cans marked SAE 20W-20 HD with period SF-SE-CC service classifications.
These cans are the type of vintage petroleum packaging that appeals to several collecting groups, including vintage oil-can collectors, gas & oil advertising collectors, automotive memorabilia collectors, garage décor collectors and motorsports enthusiasts.
One of the standout details is the original 89¢ retail price sticker still attached to the top of one can. This small original retail sticker adds a great period detail and helps preserve the look of the cans as they would have appeared in their original retail environment.
Both cans retain their original cardboard/fiberboard bodies, printed graphics and metal closures. They show honest signs of age and storage, including scuffs, scratches, surface discoloration and minor oxidation around portions of the metal edges and closures.
The bottom closures and rolled edges remain intact, and the bottoms present considerably cleaner than many surviving vintage cardboard oil cans. These cans have been left in their original vintage condition rather than refinished or artificially improved.
The original back labeling identifies the product as Pennzoil Tough-Film Motor Oil with Z-7 and describes it as a straight-grade motor oil. The cans are marked for API Service SF, SE and CC.
The original packaging is the star of this offering. These cans are being sold primarily as vintage automotive advertising and collectible petroleum packaging.

📚 A Bit of History
Pennzoil has a long history in American motorsports. Pennzoil\'s historical motorsports material traces the company\'s early involvement with automotive and aircraft performance and identifies Russ Snowberger as the first driver to use Pennzoil in the Indianapolis 500 in 1930.
The Pennzoil Indianapolis tradition continued with Wilbur Shaw in 1935 and Mauri Rose in 1951. Decades later, Pennzoil became closely associated with the bright yellow Pennzoil Specials that became recognizable in American open-wheel racing.
Pennzoil\'s Indianapolis 500 victories included Johnny Rutherford in 1980, Rick Mears in 1984 and 1988, Danny Sullivan in 1985, and Al Unser in 1987.
The connection most relevant to these cans is the Pennzoil Z-7 Special and Team Penske era.
In the 1984 Indianapolis 500, Rick Mears drove the No. 6 Pennzoil Z-7 entry for Team Penske. Indianapolis Motor Speedway historical records identify Mears as the winner, with the Pennzoil Z-7 entry leading 119 of the race\'s 200 laps.
Mears returned to victory at Indianapolis in 1988. The No. 5 Pennzoil Z-7 Penske entry started from the pole and won the race, giving Mears his third Indianapolis 500 victory.
Team Penske\'s historical material documents the 1984 No. 6 Pennzoil Z-7 March/Cosworth and the 1988 No. 5 Pennzoil Z-7 Penske/Chevy. During this period, Z-7 was therefore more than simply a retail product name — it was also part of the Pennzoil identity carried by prominent Team Penske racing entries.
This is where the phrase “Pennzoil Z-7 Special” becomes especially interesting to collectors. The terminology has a genuine place in Pennzoil\'s Indianapolis racing history, and the famous yellow Pennzoil racing cars carried the Z-7 identity associated with the brand\'s Indy 500 program.
There is an important distinction between that racing history and these particular cans: we are not claiming these cans were race-team products or race-used containers. They are original retail Pennzoil Z-7 Tough-Film oil cans. The motorsports connection is the documented history of the Z-7 name and Pennzoil brand.
Pennzoil\'s motorsports involvement later extended into other forms of racing, including NASCAR and its documented relationship with Team Penske. That broader motorsports connection is included here as brand history only. These particular cans are not being represented as NASCAR-branded merchandise.
For collectors, the original Z-7 packaging preserves a distinctive Pennzoil identity that became part of a much larger American racing story. From the early Indianapolis 500 days of Russ Snowberger to the yellow Pennzoil Specials and later Z-7 Penske cars, Pennzoil built a remarkably long relationship between its petroleum products and American motorsports.
