Defending the People by Chris Pardell

Crazy Horse (Tashunka-uitco) and Moving Robe Woman (Tashna-mani)
Issued October 1992
13" (w) x 11" (h)
33 cm (w) x 28 cm (h)
American West Premier Edition

This sculpture depicts Moving Robe Woman and Crazy Horse riding into battle on June 25, 1876. The Sioux and Cheyenne encampment at the Little Bighorn River was under attack by George Armstrong Custer's Seventh cavalry regiment. Moving Robe Woman is generally recognized as the only woman warrior in American Indian history. She is holding a spear belonging to her brother One Hawk, who was killed eight days earlier at the Battle of the Rosebud.

The Battle of Little Bighorn was the last major Indian victory, but it also marked the end of their way of life. The extermination of the buffalo by white hunters had begun a decade earlier, during construction of the transcontinental railroad. As the Plains Indians depended on the bison for their very existence, the great buffalo herds were intentionally and systematically wiped out from the American landscape.

This fine art sculpture is a Limited Edition of 950 -- limited to only 950 pieces. This is Limited Edition #657 of 950.

LEGENDS BRONZES WILL BECOME PRICELESS IN THE FUTURE. THE LEGENDS FOUNDERED PIECES MAY BE ONE OF THE LAST FOUNDERED MIXED METAL BRONZES EVER OFFERED. THECHILMARK FOUNDRY IS GONE, THE LEGENDS FOUNDRY IS GONE, MOST OF THE MONTANA FOUNDRYS ARE GONE, FEDERAL REGULATIONS, AND THE COST OF LABOR ARE MAKING IT TO HARD TO MAKE MONEY. THE LEGENDS PIECES WILL BE IN VERY SHORT SUPPLY IN THE NEXT 20 YEARS, WITH ALMOST NO PIECES ON THE MARKET LEAVING THE WESTERN ART MARKET WITH NO BRONZES. SOME ARE TRYING TO SELL PLASTIC, GLASS AND OTHER PIECES TODAY, BUT THE CHINA FACTORYS CAN MAKE THESE. THEY ARE NOT FOUNDERED MIXED METAL. MIXED METAL REQUIRES THE FOUNDRY TO FIRST FOUNDER THE PIECE, CHASE THE MOLDS, GRIND AND POLISH EDGES, THEN BACK TO HEATED FOUNDERING FOR GOLD, SILVER. AFTER THAT THEY HAVE TO CHASE AND POLISH. THE LAST STEP IS TO PAINT AND THEN HEAT THE PIECE AGAIN. THESE ARE WONDERFUL, BEAUTIFUL, AND HARD TO MAKE. 100 YEARS FROM NOW THEY WILL BE THE REMINGTONS OF OUR TIME.

Please refer to the photos to satisfy yourself of the condition of this fabulous sculpture. Acquired from the original owner and displayed in a smoke free home.

About Christopher Pardell:
Christopher Pardell began sculpting at the tender age of four, and by his teenage years, Pardell had come to the realization that sculpting was to become his life's work. Influenced by the work of renowned sculptors Russell, Remington and Rodin, Pardell wanted to pursue his passion for realism. His formal education was laid aside in favor of an apprentice moldmaker position with a commercial statuary company, and it was there that he received what he considers to be his "real education in art." As an apprentice to the Italian master artisans who ran the statuary, Christopher rapidly learned the skills that would enable him to excel as an artist and earn the stature that has come with his success. Never sketching his designs on paper, Christopher composes all of his work in three dimensions, in a maquette. This unique approach explains the unparalleled beauty and detail that are the trademarks of his work. Christopher's exceptional style and special talent have served to impress even the most discriminating collector. Currently, his artwork can be found in public and private collections throughout the world.
