This is a substantial decorative piece measuring approximately 18 inches long and 8.5 inches tall and weighing nearly 8 pounds. The weight and scale give it much more presence than the smaller carved wood animal figures commonly found. The sculpture appears to be carved from solid hardwood and has a smooth hand-finished surface with visible wood grain and natural variation throughout.
The stylized design suggests a hound, bloodhound, or similar long-eared dog, although the carving is best described as folk art rather than a precise breed representation. Its slightly exaggerated proportions and expressive face give it a great deal of personality.
No maker's mark or signature has been located. Based on the style and finish, this appears to be a vintage decorative carving, likely from the later 20th century, although the exact age and origin are unknown.
