THE ORIGINAL WEST COAST TRADING POST DESCRIPTION
LATE RENAISSANCE PERIOD LARGE HAND MADE ENGLISH KNIFE
UTILITARIAN / HAND FORGED / 2TOUCHMARKS / CIRCA 1600’s
Note thetell-tale centuries old signs of crude construction along with the bronze patchof a forging flaw in the blade that was just a square end piece of steelflattened to create an edge. The blade was attached to two Iron side strapswith 3 large iron pins that were forged to create a tang that was fitted to theone piece hand shaped wooden haft with a slot carved out and affixed to thehilt with two Iron pins. The blade has a dark natural aged black patina, spotsof pitting, and repeated hammer blows to the top that has flattened the edge toa 1/4\" flat top edge. The wooden hilt is 5\" long x 1 5/8” tall at theearly style pistol grip pommel. The hilt is untouched, as found, with a roughtexture, tiny worm holes, dark aged dirt and stains. Almost all knives fromthis period were made for multi-purpose utilitarian use. This heavy-duty pieceis 16\" tip to end overall and weighs a hefty 1 pound .7 ounces. This pieceis completely hand made with a hand forged steel blade that is 10 7/8\" x 21/2\" wide at the ricasso with has 2 very distinctive touch marks F above an* but are an unknown maker. This large, heavy-duty knife is old as dirt andwould fit into any Late Renaissance period artifact, Knife, Trapper,Frontiersman, Mountain man, Hunter / game dressing knife, camp clearing knifeor utilitarian knife. Very few artifacts from this late Renaissance period haveoriginal, untouched aging, and should be left as found and not cleaned.
London Mastercutlers are recorded as early as 1584, and the Cutler’s pictorial touch marksare known as early as 1606. There are hundreds of these touch marks that were abaffling array of symbols, letters, numbers that were marks attributed to a“little Meister”, individual cutlers or small cutlery shops. It was common forrural provincial cutlery shops to produce and sell small-run handmade typicalutilitarian knives locally. These knives were not mass-produced and are rare becauseof their extreme age, and production numbers were tiny and distribution waslocal; and most were used hard and discarded. Some established cutlery familiesregistered a touchmark and stamped their cutlery. Most were short lived due todeath, abandonment or transfer. Sheffield cutlery marks also are from thisperiod and only a few marks were carried into the early 1700’s and werepublished in the first Sheffield City directory in 1740. Thus, most earlycutlery / touch marks are old and real but are not attributable and are mostlyonly found in old handwritten periodgovernment documents that did not survive. The Sheffield 1787 Makers directoryis more inclusive and includes Factors, i.e., a person or firm who sold cutlerymarked with his brand by independent workmen called little Meister\'s, a systemcalled “liver and draw”. Around 1814, cutlery rules changed permitting the useof a full name, address along with his Word or pictorial mark, and advances indie reducing technology allowed for smaller lettering for gang hot bladestampings. As with early cutlery / touch marks that were used to as late as1820s, many Sheffield & London cutlery pieces that have a Maker name andcity address are old and real but unlisted, as the firms were short lived dueto mergers, acquisitions, buyouts and bankruptcy. In my opinion, this earlystyle handmade artisanship / craftsmanship could date between the 1500s to theearly 1700s; most probably in the late Renaissance 1600’s.
