Key for a vintage The Automatic Recording Safe Company "Traveling Teller" bank For Sale

Your bank MUST be marked on the bottom with

the words "The Traveling Teller". If it is not, then stop here - this is the

wrong key for you.

This is a brand new keyprecision laser cut from stainless steelmade specifically for the style of vintage "The Automatic Recording Safe Company" savings bank you see in the photos. This bank is marked on the bottom with "The Traveling Teller", and measuring approximately 3-3/4"L x 1-3/4"W x 2-1/4"H. If your bank says "The Branch Bank"you need a different key which I have for sale as well - check my other listings. I have been told that there is a smaller version of these banks (approximately 3-1/4"L) and that the key is not the same for the smaller version, so measure your bank before ordering and be sure it matches the three dimensions I have listed above.

These savings banks were promotional items issued to customers by various commercial banks and savings & loan companies. The idea was that you would insert coins and bills into it then bring it to your bank where they would open it and make a deposit of its contents into your account. The hitch was that they gave you the bank but no keys; they held the keys.

You will see these banks sold in antique shops, estate sales, and on and other sites and you might even find one in a drawer in your home, but only rarely do they include a key. So, I designed one and offer it for sale so now you can open your old bank!! If you are fortunate you will find old coins in there with some value, especially silver dimes, quarters, or half dollars dated 1964 or earlier, or silver war nickels.

TIP:Sometimes the insert does not want to come out of the bottom of the shell when you turn the key. The key only needs to turn 1/4 turn counterclockwise to release the lock. If the key turns a full quarter turn and the bottom does not come out then unbend half of a paper clip and put a 1/2” hook at the end of it, insert this hook in the hole in the bottom of the bank, and while turning the key, pull on the paper clip. The insert should come right out.

A word of caution: The inserts for both "The

Traveling Teller" and"The Branch Bank"are interchangeable and nearly identical, except for the markings on the bottom. However, the lock is built into the bank shell and the

keys are not identical. It is entirely possible for someone to have

switched inserts between the two types of shells in which case the

bottom markings of the insert will not match the key type used in the

shell. Sometimes the bank is missing the bottom identifying plate

altogether, so you won't know which type of shell you have.

Although the key slot may look like those on other manufacturer’s banks, do not assume this key fits any other kind of bank - it does not. See my other listing for keys for a Standard Thrift Bank.
