Root (1820–1895), best known for “The Battle Cry of Freedom.” This small-format broadside was printed in New York around 1863–1864, likely by H. De Marsan, whose Chatham Street press was known for its distinctive ornamental borders.
The song’s text captures a soldier’s farewell thoughts to his mother before battle — a popular and emotional theme among Union troops and their families. These song sheets were sold by sutlers and street vendors, intended for soldiers to carry or send home during the war.

Printed one side only on thin wartime paper with black decorative border; blank verso. Measures approximately 7 × 4 inches.
Condition:
Good overall for age. Displays toning, light browning, and moderate creasing, particularly at lower left corner. Small tear at center fold. No text loss; all wording remains clear and legible.
