Jean Baptiste Baillon, an ormolu Bronze mantel clock 18th C Repeater
Hello and thank you for looking.
For sale is this lovely Baillon clock from C. 1855 with works by Vincenti & Cie (small round mark noting “Medaille L’Argent Vincenti & Cie 1855 under chime). Face of clock is marked “Baillon” and what appears “Ouentin” - some wear loss over the years (see photos).
While the condition is not working the clock appears complete (including pendulum and key) and ready for restoration. The clock features a wood, molded plinth in black supporting a black slate case which encases clock face (in black with Roman numerals) and top. Atop clock is a bronze figure of a seated male emblematic of Learning similar to design by Laurent Guiard. Clock from plinth to top of bronze figure is 18”, length is approximately 15”, width is approximately 6.5”.
Some losses to slate along molded top - see photos. Also 2 shallow holes behind scholars arm (holding orb) indicating possible losses (holes extend approximately 1.5/2mm deep). Interesting features include figures right leg and right arm (holding or ) appearing to have some “give” - intentional - possibly for application of bronze.
Condition - as noted above, some losses to slate around frieze/molded slate top (see attached photos). Bronze figure is a little loose but nothing inconsistent with age - slight tightening should fix. Possible feature loss behind arm of scholar (again - holes not all the way through - only a few mm so somewhat unclear - doubtful item was glued on). Minor wear and warping to wood base but nothing awful considering age - see photos.
