Japanese Studio Pottery Ikebana Bowl Carved Stoneware Signed Nagakawa Tōgei 9"
A Japanese studio pottery ikebana vessel attributed to Nagakawa Tōgei, executed in carved stoneware with a high-fired black glaze interior. The low, wide form with an offset well reflects traditional ikebana design principles, allowing for asymmetrical floral composition while maintaining visual balance.
The exterior is hand-worked with rhythmic vertical carving, exposing the claybody beneath a restrained surface finish—an approach aligned with mid-20thcentury Mingei-influenced studio practice.
The contrast between the textured matteexterior and the glossy black interior glaze demonstrates controlled kilnfiring and deliberate material interplay. The underside bears the impressedstudio mark 長川陶芸,indicating workshop production rather than industrial manufacture.
A functional sculptural object suited for ikebana, centerpiece display, or as a standalone example of Japanese modern studioceramics.
