Product DescriptionJapanese Bronze Buddhist Sutra Container Style Vase by HANNYA Kankei w/ Wood Box
This is a Japanese bronze flower vase inspired by traditional Buddhist sutra containers, made by HANNYA Kankei (般若勘渓, born 1933), a renowned metalwork artist from Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture, Japan.
HANNYA Kankei is known for his traditional metal casting techniques, particularly his work with sahari, a copper-tin alloy. He has received recognition for his craftsmanship and participated in the reproduction of historical treasures from the Shosoin Repository at the request of the Imperial Household Agency.
Traditional Buddhist sutra containers were cylindrical vessels used to preserve sacred Buddhist scriptures in scroll form. This vase incorporates their distinctive shape into a flower vessel designed for Japanese tea ceremony.
With its simple and elegant form, this piece reflects the beauty of traditional Japanese metalwork. It is suitable for use as a tea ceremony flower vase or as a decorative art object.
The vase comes with its original wooden storage box.
